  3. York 1933-45. Elected against the opposition
  4. of the powerful Tammany Hall Democratic Party
  5. organization, he cleaned up the
  6. administration, suppressed racketeering; and
  7. organized unemployment relief, slum-clearance
  8. schemes, and social services. Although
  9. nominally a Republican, he strongly supported
  10. F D Roosevelt's New Deal. La Guardia Airport,
  11. in New York City, is named after him.
